Since the 1950s, organ transplants have given thousands of people a new lease on life, but demand far exeeds supply. In the United States, an average 19 patients a day die while on organ transplant wait lists. How should our society decide who receives these precious resources? Should priority go to the sickest patients or those who wait the longest or those who have the most years of life ahead?
Dr. John Roberts, chief of the UCSF Transplant Service, will discuss policies for organ distribution and explore the ethics of alternate models at the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco.
Tickets are available via the Commonwealth Club's Web site at tickets.commonwealthclub.org or by calling (415) 597-6700. Admission is $8 for members and $15 for non-members. A reception will begin at 5:30 p.m., followed by the lecture at 6 p.m.
This lecture is part of UCSF Medical Center's weeklong celebration of Transplant Week and UCSF's 100,000 organ transplant patients. For more informatioin, visit www.ucsfhealth.org/transplants.
