Exhibition Features Art by Cancer Patients

September 29, 2006
News Office: Nancy Chan (415) 476-2557

WHAT: Altered shoes and plaster face masks are part of a month-long art exhibition created by cancer patients participating in the UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center's Art for Recovery program.

Patients altered their own personal shoes to fit the phrase shoes are the messenger of the soul; they carry us, protect us and support us, an art theme attributed to Art for Recovery director Cindy Perlis. One patient changed her slippers into a metaphor for the darkness of breast cancer and also the hope. Plaster face masks were made to speak to the hidden feelings that occur while coping with cancer.

There will also be displays of paintings, poetry, collages and drawings by breast cancer patients and others with life-threatening illnesses.

WHO: The UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center's Art for Recovery program San Francisco Women Artists, a volunteer non-profit organization.

WHEN: Wednesday, October 4 through Saturday, November 4, 2006 Hours are: Tuesdays: 12-3 p.m.; Wednesday through Saturday: 12-5 p.m.

A reception will take place on Thursday, October 12, 5:30-7:30 p.m. Open to the general public.

WHERE: San Francisco Women Artists Gallery 3489 Sacramento Street (at Laurel Street) san Francisco HOW: Admission is free to the exhibition and reception.
