ABOUT IPF — IPF is a lung disorder characterized by a progressive scarring — known as fibrosis — and deterioration of the lungs, which slowly robs its victims of their ability to breathe. About 128,000 Americans suffer from IPF, the most prevalent disease in a classification of lung disorders known as interstitial lung diseases (ILDs). There is currently no known cause or cure for IPF and no FDA-approved treatment. An estimated 48,000 new cases are diagnosed each year. IPF is difficult to diagnose, and an estimated two-thirds of patients die within five years of diagnosis. (Source: Coalition for Pulmonary Fibrosis)

TREATMENT AT UCSF — The Interstitial Lung Disease Center of Excellence at UCSF treats some of the most severe cases of IPF. World-renowned lung specialists, chest radiologists, pathologists and in some cases, lung transplant specialists, work together as a team to design the most effective treatment plan for patients with IPF. UCSF Medical Center is ranked among the top 10 in the nation by U.S. News & World Report in the treatment of respiratory problems, including pulmonary fibrosis.

ABOUT UCSF — UCSF is a leading university that advances health worldwide by conducting advanced biomedical research, educating graduate students in the life sciences and health professions, and providing complex patient care.
