July 10, 2007
Contact: News Office (415) 476-2557

Mark Laret, chief executive officer of UCSF Medical Center, is the 2007 corporate chair of the American Heart Association's signature fundraising event called Heart Walk in San Francisco. The medical center is a sponsor of and a participant in the annual event, which will be held from noon to 1 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 21, beginning at San Francisco's Justin Herman Plaza at 1 Market St.

UCSF's goal is to recruit more than 300 team members and raise a total of $125,000, Laret said. Last year, UCSF teams raised more than $80,000, according to Karen Rago, administrative director of the UCSF Heart and Vascular Center and UCSF's "company lead" for the walk.

Proceeds from the walk will help fight heart disease, the nation's No. 1 killer. More than 1 million walkers are expected to participate in more than 450 events across the nation. The Western States Affiliate hosts Heart Walks in 26 communities in California, Nevada and Utah.

For more information about the walk in downtown San Francisco, contact Julia Huang in the UCSF Heart and Vascular Center at (415) 502-8786.
