Cooke Elected to National Medical Examiners Board

July 30, 2007
Contact: News Office (415) 476-2557

Dr. Molly Cooke, an internist at UCSF Medical Center, was elected a four-year term as a member-at-large of the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME).

The NBME is an independent, not-for-profit organization that provides high-quality examinations for health professions. The NBME developed the three-step United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE), which provides a common evaluation system for applicants seeking initial licensure to practice medicine in the United States.

In addition, the NBME provides testing, educational, consultative, and research services to a number of medical specialty boards and societies and healthcare organizations in the United States and internationally.

At UCSF, Cooke is professor of medicine, William G. Irwin Endowed Chair and director of the Haile T. Debas Academy of Medical Educators. The academy was established to serve as a community for medical school faculty with significant commitment to medical education, to advocate for teachers in the promotion process and to enhance funding in support of teaching. It is nationally recognized as a groundbreaking initiative.

Cooke also is a senior scholar at the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.

In the past, Cooke has provided volunteer service to the NBME as a member of the USMLE Step 2 Medicine Committee. USMLE is a joint program of the National Board of Medical Examiners and the Federation of State Medical Boards. Results of USMLE are reported to individual licensing authorities in the United States and its territories for use in granting the initial license to practice medicine.
