Free Physicals with Heart Screenings for San Francisco Student Athletes

March 16, 2009
Contact: Jason Miyamoto (415) 885-3819

Sudden cardiac death is a growing concern among athletes. Each year several deaths occur due to cardiac incidents. These tragedies could have been prevented the heart conditions were detected earlier. Today, many professional and college athletes are getting electrocardiogram (EKG) and ultrasound screenings to detect dangerous heart abnormalities. These tests may save the lives of athletes.

UCSF Sports Medicine, UCSF's Department of Cardiology as well as a team of volunteer medical staff are offering a unique opportunity for San Francisco high school student-athletes. On Saturday, May 2, athletes will be offered free pre-participation physical exams, complete with cardiac screening designed to identify athletes with potentially troubling heart conditions.

San Francisco schools and student athletes are invited to benefit from these state-of-the art physical exams completed by physicians from UCSF including orthopedic surgeons and sports medicine experts. Cardiologists will interpret the EKG's and perform echocardiograms. Athletes with health risks will be offered follow up care.

This program is offered to any student registered in a high school in San Francisco. Physicals will be offered to the first 300 students registered. To enroll athletes need to contact their school's athletic director (A.D.) and complete a consent form and other paperwork to reserve an appointment. Each high school's designated athletic trainer has been advised to meet with each A.D. to go over the specifics in person.

This program is supported by UCSF Sports Medicine, UCSF Cardiology, National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame and CIF: San Francisco Section.
