A Family Matter
If heart problems run in your family, genetic testing can be done to see if you carry a gene for a specific disorder. The UCSF Program in Cardiovascular Genetics helps to identify and treat genetic heart disorders.

Lung Transplant at UCSF
UCSF has performed more than 250 transplants since the program began in 1991. The one-year survival rate for UCSF patients is 90 percent, compared to the national average or "expected" rate of 80 percent.

The Benefits of Brain Mapping
Sasha Cano's brain tumor was under a major artery in her brain that affects language, memory, movement and sensory brain function. A technique developed at UCSF called brain mapping enabled surgeons to avoid areas of the brain that control cognitive function and remove as much of the tumor as possible.

Bouncing Back After Knee Surgery
Corey Capozziello suffered one of the most common injuries among female athletes — a torn anterior cruciate ligament. Capozziello who injured her knee playing soccer was referred to UCSF's Dr. Christina Allen, who treats the U.S. women's soccer team.
