Other Experts Dana Francis, blood disorders social workerDana Francis is a social worker who specializes in working with children who have blood disorders and their families. He earned a degree in social work at the University of Washington and has been a member of the pediatric hematology team at UCSF Children's Hospital since 1988. Susan Karp, clinical nurse specialistSusan Karp is a clinical nurse specialist who specializes in caring for children and adults with hemophilia and other bleeding disorders. She has served as the nurse coordinator of UCSF Medical Center's Hemophilia Treatment Center since 1978. Karp has lectured extensively at both national and local hemophilia meetings for both providers and patients. She is also actively involved in patient outreach and support programs and helped to start the Northern California Hemophilia Summer Camp, now in its 28th year.
Karp earned an undergraduate degree in sociology from the University of California, Berkeley and an undergraduate and graduate degree in nursing from Boston University, where she was elected to Sigma Theta Tau, the National Nursing Honor Society. She has served on the following committees: the National Hemophilia Foundation Education Committee, the board of directors of the Northern California Hemophilia Foundation, the federal office of Maternal Child Health Ad Hoc Advisory Committee to Evaluate a National HIV/AIDS Prevention Project and the local Ryan White Planning Council to evaluate projects and award funds to Bay Area HIV Programs. Karp also served as chairperson of the National Hemophilia Foundation Nursing Executive Committee. In 1991, she was awarded the First Annual National Hemophilia Foundation Nursing Award. Patricia Tobase, physical therapistPatricia Tobase is a physical therapist who specializes in the care of children and adults with bleeding disorders. She has been a member of the UCSF Hemophilia Treatment Center, where she provides evaluations and treatments for patients, since 1992. In addition, she provides education to patients, families and other health care providers. Tobase is board certified as an orthopedic clinical specialist and an assistant clinical professor in the Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science at UCSF.
