Blood Disorders

Blood, which is essential for life, is composed of different types of cells with specific functions — red blood cells transport oxygen through the body, white blood cells defend against infection and platelets help control bleeding. These cells are made in bone marrow, so well-functioning bone marrow is necessary for healthy blood.

At UCSF Medical Center, our blood disorder specialists provide the best care possible for adults and children with acute and chronic blood conditions — from hemophilia, a blood-clotting disorder, to blood-related cancers. Some diseases are inherited while others are acquired and all require specialized treatment.

Understanding that the diagnosis of and treatment for blood disorders can be emotionally and physically difficult, we are dedicated to making sure our patients receive the highest quality health care as well as the support they need.

We treat a wide range of conditions including:

We also treat hepatosplenomegaly and adenopathy, anemias such as sickle cell and hemostatic coagulation disorders like hemophilia.

In addition, UCSF Medical Center is a leader in blood and bone marrow transplants as a treatment option for a number of blood disorders. Our expert transplant team is comprised of specialists in caring for patients and their families throughout the transplant process.
