Lau Diana, clinical nurse specialist

Clinical nurse specialist Diana Lau is co-founder and administrative director of the UCSF Asian Heart and Vascular Center. She has been dedicated to improving the health care of ethnic minority populations, particularly reducing heart disease and stroke in the Asian population. In 2005, in collaboration with Dr. Gordon Fung, she co-founded the UCSF Asian Heart and Vascular Center, the first of its kind. She also founded the Asian Healthcare Institute, Inc., a non-profit organization that aims to improve health and decrease health care disparities among Asian Americans.

In 1994, she started the country's first Chinese Cardiac Support group and began volunteering as a radio host on two regular Asian health programs. She is developing an Asian language bilingual health care Web site. Lau is a member of many professional organizations, such as the honor society of nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International; American Heart Association; and San Francisco Immigrant Rights Commission, for which she hs served as the commissioner and chair since 2000. Lau also chaired the nation's first Mayor's San Francisco Immigrant Rights Commission.
