Colorectal Cancer Research

Based at the UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Clinical Colorectal Cancer Research program focuses on the epidemiology, prevention and early detection of colorectal cancer. Patients have access to a team of gastroenterologists, oncologists, colorectal surgeons and nutritionists in one location.

One of the primary objectives of the Colorectal Cancer Research program is to determine the historical, environmental, dietary and genetic factors as well as the biological markers that identify patients who are at a high-risk of developing colorectal cancer. In fact, the program is developing a registry of Northern California families with colorectal cancer or with a high-risk of developing the condition.

The program is creating a bank of serum and tissue samples from people without cancer, high-risk individuals and patients with colorectal cancer, which can be analyzed to determine a variety of genetic and histologic markers. Patients are offered general and dietary counseling services and opportunities to enroll in prospective surveillance and chemoprevention studies.
