Dysplasia Clinic

The Dysplasia Clinic at UCSF Medical Center offers state-of-the-art care for men and women with dysplasia, including anal and cervical dysplasia, as well as genital warts and related conditions.

Anal dysplasia, caused by the human papillomavirus (H)V), is a pre-cancerous condition that may lead to anal cancer. It is especially common among patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

Cervical dysplasia also is a pre-cancerous condition, typically caused by HPV and often detected by an abnormal Pap smear. Vulvar disease or pain also are associated with cervical dysplasia.

The Dysplasia Clinic provides a full range of screening and treatment options including colposcopy, a visual examination of the cervix; loop excision to remove abnormal tissue; laser therapy; high-resolution and anoscopy to view the anus, anal canal and lower rectum.

We also offer the ThinPrep Pap test, an improvement on the conventional Pap test that was approved by the federal Food and Drug Administration.

Because our doctors are involved in research, patients at the clinic may have the opportunity to enroll in clinical trials which are studies to test the safety and effectiveness of new medications and treatments.

Our philosophy is that information and knowledge are powerful aspects of the healing process and we encourage our patients to participate in the choice of treatment options.

Appointments

If your health insurance plan is a health maintenance organization (HMO), you'll need a written "referral authorization" prior to your appointment.

If you're a new patient, we will ask you to bring or send copies of your medical records that apply to the care you're seeking, such as previous Pap smear or biopsy results.
