Kidney Transplant — Paired Exchange
The Paired Exchange Kidney Transplant, also called the "Family Swap," is a way for a living donor to benefit a loved one even if his or her blood and tissue types don't match. A "paired exchange" allows patients who have willing but incompatible donors to "exchange" kidneys with other donors.
For example, Anna wants to give her sister Marie a kidney, but differences in blood type make it impossible. At the same time, William wants to give his sister Judith a kidney, but differences
in blood type make that impossible.
An exchange could be arranged so Anna could donate her kidney to Judith and William could donate to Marie, if blood and tissue types allow.
The two kidney transplants and two donor surgeries would occur at the same time.
To discuss a possible living donor transplant, call the UCSF Transplant office at (415) 353-1551 and ask for the Living Donor Kidney Transplant Program coordinator.
