Breastfeeding Program

The UCSF Women's Health Resource Center offers an Outpatient Lactation Program, providing instruction, education and support for breastfeeding. We offer initial lactation consultations, comprehensive follow-up visits and free telephone advice for mothers with concerns about breastfeeding.

During your initial visit, a consultant will:

  • Observe you and your baby for one to two feedings
  • Answer your questions
  • Offer possible solutions for any problems you are having
  • Suggest other resources
  • Work with you to develop a plan that meets your breastfeeding goals

Our certified lactation consultants communicate with our doctors, staff and other key hospital personnel to assure continuity of care and advice.

We offer follow-up visits to review technique, address any new questions or concerns and provide you with ongoing support.

In addition, certified lactation consultants are available to triage your questions, provide information about community resources and schedule personal instruction visits. Our telephone advice service is free.

The visit lengths and fees for lactation consultation break down as follows:

  • Initial Visit -- 75 minutes for $75
  • Follow-up Visit -- 45 minutes for $50 or 30 minutes for $35
  • Free Telephone Advice -- five to 10 minutes

By breastfeeding, you give your baby the very best start in life. To make an appointment or speak with a certified lactation consultant, visit or give us a call.
