Lipid Clinics
The UCSF Lipid Clinics provide the full range of diagnostic and treatment services for adults and children with cholesterol and triglyceride disorders. These conditions can lead to atherosclerosis -- narrowing of the arteries -- that increases a person's chance of having a heart attack or stroke. Very high levels of triglycerides can also cause pancreatitis.
Our Adult Lipid Clinic, established in 1961, is dedicated to early diagnosis and treatment of cholesterol and triglyceride disorders, as well as management of other risk factors, to prevent heart disease and stroke or to reverse existing arterial disease.
Children and teenagers with lipid disorders are treated in our Pediatric Lipid Clinic, which was established in 1971. The focus is on the diagnosis of genetic disorders of lipid metabolism and their management for primary prevention of heart disease and stroke.
Both clinics work with each patient to achieve normal levels of lipids through a combination of diet modification, exercise and carefully prescribed lipid lowering medications. Since our clinics' inception, we have made major contributions to diagnostic methods and treatments of lipid disorders. We are also at the forefront of clinical and basic research that aims to better understand lipid disorders and atherosclerosis, including the important discovery of a number of genes that are associated with coronary heart disease and stroke.
