Melanoma Clinic

The Melanoma Center at Mount Zion provides consultations and treatment for all stages of melanoma. Data from thousands of melanoma cases has been entered into the clinic's database since its inception in 1971. We use this resource during our consultations to predict the future of the disease.

Newly diagnosed patients and those who have suffered a recurrence of melanoma receive a comprehensive evaluation and consultation, including a review of medical history, physical exam, pathology assessment of biopsy specimen, psychosocial interview and recommendations concerning an individualized plan of treatment and follow-up.

Those at risk of developing melanoma -- people with a family history of melanoma, those who numerous moles or those who have sun-damaged and sun-sensitive skin -- receive complete skin evaluations, assessments of any suspicious pigmented lesions, recommendations for biopsies and dermoscopy, when appropriate. Detailed education regarding changes in moles and sun exposure also is provided.

For referring physicians, an important service is the evaluation of slides depicting primary melanoma. The pathology evaluation helps to establish the risk of recurrence and provide recommendations for treatment. To contact the Melanoma Center, please call (415) 353-9888.
