Neurovascular Disease and Stroke Center

The UCSF Neurovascular Disease and Stroke Center provides the most advanced medical care to patients with stroke, aneurysm and other neurovascular disorders, such as arteriovenous malformation (AVM), dural arteriovenous fistulae (DAVF) and cavernous angioma.

It is recognized as one of the world's leading centers for diagnosing and treating stroke and is the first center in San Francisco to be certified by the national Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) as a primary stroke center.

Our experts include more than 30 specialists such as neurosurgeons, neurologists, interventional neuroradiologists, specially trained nurses, therapists and rehabilitation specialists who confer daily and during weekly conferences to make therapeutic decisions and coordinate treatment strategies.

Services

We provide a complete spectrum of services to meet each patient's needs.

  • Consultations to other doctors.
  • Inpatient care to more than 600 inpatients with a full range of neurovascular disorders each year. As the leading referral center for neurovascular disorders in Northern California, many of our patients are transferred from other hospitals in the region for specialty care.
  • Modern management and treatment of neurovascular disorders, including rare and difficult to treat conditions. We offer standard treatments, as well as innovative surgical and endovascular approaches and technologies, such as microsurgical techniques, occlusion with platinum coils and 3-D computer modeling for aneurysms.
  • Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit for patients with serious and life-threatening conditions.
  • Outpatient specialty evaluation and treatment to more than 1,200 patients each year. Many of our consultations are with patients who have been referred by a neurologist for a second opinion, or referred by their own primary doctor for evaluation.
  • Rapid diagnosis, evaluation and treatment of stroke. We provide a physician-to-physician hotline 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for emergency consultations, referrals and transfers to UCSF.
