Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation
Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation offers services to patients of all ages who suffer from movement dysfunction. The goal is to help patients recover maximum physical function.
The program treats impairments in movement such as those related to chronic pain, spine and extremity disorders, gait abnormalities, joint replacements, polio, balance dysfunction, brain injury, stroke, tumors, amputations and neurodegenerative conditions, such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, hemophilia, chronic heart and lung conditions and amputations.
Physical, occupational and speech therapy services are available to patients who are hospitalized as well as those recovering in the community.
Our approach is to treat patients in a holistic manner, incorporating evaluation and intervention for the physical problem and how that physical problem impacts emotional, social and occupational functioning. The goal is to restore patients to their prior level of functional ability when possible.
Each patient is carefully evaluated to determine the program that best meets his or her needs. We offer therapeutic modalities, orthotic-assistive devices and exercise or learning based practices to facilitate healing and recover emotional, social, physical, occupational and recreational function.

Health and Wellness Program
Established in 2007, the Health and Wellness Program at UCSF's new Mission Bay campus provides education, consultation and supervised exercise programs for athletes, people working in stressful jobs, seniors and people with disabilities and injuries.
Programs are designed by physical therapists to provide education and individualized exercise instruction to promote weight maintenance, stress management, good posture, mental acuity, cardiopulmonary fitness, endurance, balance, coordination, flexibility and strength. Our senior programs target the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis, arthritis, neurological degeneration and other age-related conditions.
Physical therapy classes and rehabilitation services designed for specific injuries — such as musculoskeletal, neurological and cardiopulmonary — are offered. All classes are taught or supervised by UCSF physical therapists.
Free Drop-in Clinic
Our Physical Therapy and Wellness Program also offers a Free Drop-in Clinic twice a month where patients can ask questions and discuss concerns with a physical therapist. The clinics vary by date and time.
Please call (415) 514-4816 to confirm the day and time of the clinic.
Individual Consultations
Physical therapists provide fee-based individual consultation and injury screening. Following screening, the physical therapist may recommend our Physical Therapy and Wellness classes, individual training programs, a referral to a trainer, a referral to physical therapy services or further evaluation by a doctor.
