Prostate Cancer Center
At the UCSF Prostate Cancer Center, the search for more effective treatment has resulted in a unique collaboration between investigators and doctors committed to improving the lives of men who have the disease and those at risk of getting it.
The health care professionals at the center share one vision -- to prevent and cure prostate cancer and to improve the quality of life of men undergoing treatment. To this end, the center focuses on:
- Discovering the fundamental biological processes underlying prostate cancer
- Translating those discoveries into new ideas for prevention, diagnosis and treatment
- Incorporating those ideas into medical practice through rigorous clinical trials
- Providing patients the best in multidisciplinary care
- Distributing new information about prostate cancer as a resource for patients, doctors and researchers
Approach
The Prostate Cancer Center's clinical program serves the needs of an expanding population of patients referred at all stages of prostate cancer. Services include:
- Prostate cancer screening
- Counseling for men at increased risk
- Diagnostic imaging
- Second opinions
- A variety of treatment options, including acess to new or investigational treatments
Treatment is tailored to individual patient's needs and may include a variety of options, such as surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy or immunotherapy. In addition, patients have access to clinical trails.
The center participates in the state-funded Improving Access, Counseling and Treatment for Californians with Prostate Cancer (IMPACT) program, designed to provide services to low-income men in California with limited or no health insurance.
In addition, the center includes a special clinic for patients at high risk for developing prostate cancer based on family history, African-American ethnicity, an elevated prostate-specific antigen (PSA) level or a previous abnormal prostate biopsy that indicated a non-cancerous prostate condition such as atypia or prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia (PIN).
The Prostate Cancer Center is part of the UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center (CCC) that offers patients services such as:
- Cancer support groups and wellness programs
- Nutrition counseling
- Individualized exercise programs
- National clinical trials
For patients newly diagnosed with prostate cancer, the Prostate Cancer Center regularly presents an educational overview of living with prostate cancer. This empowering experience encompasses issues from diagnosis through treatment options, outcomes and recovery, with time dedicated to diet and life style changes, complementary therapies and stress reduction.
