Transplantation Laboratory
The Transplantation Laboratory studies a number of interrelated aspects of transplantation-immunology, medicine and surgery. Different members of the group are addressing:
- mechanisms of graft rejection
- immunogenicity of islet allografts
- immunogenicity of liver components
- effect of immunosuppression on tumor growth
- optimal therapy for hepatoma
- liver regeneration
- organ preservation
- role of class I in the induction of tolerance.
We use tissue culture techniques, microvascular surgery for rat hepatic transplantation, mouse islet transplantation, the SCID-mu and SCID-hu models and mixed chimeric mouse models. We also actively study clinical transplantation with randomized controlled trials of immunosuppressive drugs and other therapies. We are soon to embark on a clinical trial of liver assist devices as extracorporeal support bridges to transplantation for patients with fulminant hepatic failure.
