Britt-Marie Ljung, M.D.

Pathologist

Dr. Britt-Marie Ljung is a pathologist and one of several doctors at UCSF Medical Center who performs fine needle aspirations, a simple procedure through which material is drawn out of a lump or tumor to determine if it is benign or malignant. The procedure can yield a quick assessment within a day or two. Ljung is dedicated to finding the causes of cancer and providing patients a timely diagnosis.

Educated in Stockholm, Sweden at the Karolinska Institute, she earned a medical degree in 1975. She completed part of her medical training in Sweden in oncology, the study of cancer; and in cytology, the study of cellular diagnosis. She continued her training at UCLA and in 1983 completed a residency in pathology, the medical science most concerned with the development of abnormal conditions, such as cancer. She joined the staff at UCSF Medical Center that same year. Ljung has written over 100 articles on the complex nature of breast and other cancers for medical and scientific journals. She is a professor of pathology at UCSF with activities in cytopathology, the science that deals with disease on the cellular level.
