Igor Barani, M.D.

Radiation cancer specialist

Dr. Igor Barani is a radiation cancer specialist with a particular interest in the treatment of cancer of the brain and central nervous system. He specializes in the use of radiosurgical techniques, such as the Cyberknife, to treat adults and children with malignant and benign conditions. He's also interested in the development and implementation of new treatments for brain tumors, especially treatments that preserve brain and other neurologic function.

Barani's research revolves around neural stem cells and their potential roles in the development of gliomas, which is cancer of the brain or spine, as well as neurocognitive decline after treatment. The study of treatment-related side effects is increasingly important as the number of long-term survivors of childhood and adult brain tumors increases with improved therapies. Barani is exploring neural stem cell biology and modern treatment techniques to benefit patients with central nervous system tumors. He is an assistant professor of radiation oncology at UCSF.
