SF Giants Players Visit UCSF Children's Hospital Patients

San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Livan Hernandez spent part of the lunch hour today helping to choose just the right T-shirt for a little boy awaiting a bone marrow transplant at UCSF Children's Hospital.

Hernandez along with teammates Reggie Sanders and Yorvit Torrealba spent about an hour Friday visiting with patients and their families as part of the "Cover All Bases" children's hospital visitation program. The program is coordinated by the Major League Baseball Players Trust For Children, a charitable foundation established and administered by Major League baseball players.

The players met in the Teen Room at the hospital as patients, their siblings and not a few fathers came by for autographs, to pose for pictures and for Players Choice licensed products including caps, T-shirts and stuffed animals.

Hernandez was especially taken with one boy who needed his help in choosing a T-shirt for his brother, a potential marrow recipient who couldn't join the others because of the nature of his illness.

"Cover All Bases" was developed by the Major League Baseball Players Association's Players Trust For Children as a way to help spread some cheer and brighten the days of hospitalized children across the United States and parts of Canada. The 2002 "Cover All Bases" program will also visit children's hospitals in Atlanta, Chicago, St. Louis, Baltimore and Minnesota.
