Children's Outpatient Clinic Gets Facelift

There's a new spirit of play in the outpatient clinics of UCSF Children's Hospital.

Chalkboards in waiting rooms and exam rooms encourage young patients to draw. There are play areas, colorful murals and plenty of chairs. Bright colors and wide corridors were added for patients -- ranging from toddlers to teens -- as well as their parents.

This new environment is the result of a three-year remodeling project, completed in May that expanded and modernized the facility. The redesigned clinics, located on the second floor of the Ambulatory Care Center at 400 Parnassus Ave., have four main waiting lounges and more than 40 exam rooms for the Pediatric Heart Center, primary care, teen health, urgent care and several other specialties.

Architects from the San Francisco firm of Ansen+Allen, who designed the clinic, presented their work in April at a national symposium on health care design in San Francisco. The presentations included a clinic tour for architects and designers.
