UCSF Children's Hospital | Cancer Event Focuses on Education, Inspiration and Celebration

The UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center will co-sponsor a two-day celebration of life on Sept. 9 and 10.

This annual free event will be held at the Nob Hill Masonic Center in San Francisco from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sept. 9, and from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Sept. 10.

Open to cancer patients, survivors, their families, friends and health professionals, this community event was designed to improve the health and wellness of cancer patients and survivors. Now in its 12th year, the program's scope is broad and features presentations by authors, physicians, performers, and musicians and incorporates humor, healing stories and networking time. The purpose is to inspire and encourage people to strengthen their own healing potential and ability to thrive.

Event speakers are Dr. Laura Esserman, director of the Carol Franc Buck Breast Care Center at UCSF Medical Center; author and psychiatrist Dr. Judith Orloff; and author Michael Lerner, president of Commonweal, a health and environmental research institute in Bolinas, Calif. Scheduled performances include the Araceli Theatre Project from San Francisco General Hospital, taiko drumming by Sacramento Taiko Dan, singer/songwriter Shaina Noll and humorist and juggler Scott Burton.

The event is part of a series of public conferences on "Cancer as a Turning Point, From Surviving to Thriving" produced by Healing Journeys, a non-profit organization based in Sacramento, Calif.
