Lending a Supportive Ear

Social worker Amanda Kice chats with Melissa's mother, Maria (left). In 2007, Kice and another mother of a child who received a BMT at UCSF, Gina Long, started a support group for parents whose children are in the hospital for a BMT. During the group, parents share stories, practical information and advice. Many close friendships have developed and parents continue to support one another after leaving the hospital. The support group takes place on Monday afternoons from 1 to 2 p.m. in the waiting room on the seventh floor of the children's hospital.
