Treating spinal problems in growing children is a specialized field that involves medical expertise as well as an understanding of childhood development. Problems that may seem minor when a child is small may evolve into larger issues if not managed properly in their early stages. Pediatric orthopedists understand not only how a condition impacts a child's life at the time of diagnosis, but also how it will impact future physical, emotional and social development.
Our pediatric orthopedists are experts in managing the special needs of children with back problems. Some of the back problems we treat include scoliosis, kyphosis or "hunch back" and spondylolisthesis, a condition in which one vertebra slips forward on the one below it. In addition, collaboration with UCSF Medical Center researchers provides access to the latest developments in diagnosing, treating and caring for children with spinal problems.
Our team is comprised of doctors, nurses and physical therapists who work together to develop treatment plans that are tailored to each child's individual needs. Our goal is to improve the child's quality of life, decrease pain and enhance spinal function.
