Minimally Invasive Surgery

Our Experts

Doctors

Pediatric surgeons are specially trained to perform procedures and use equipment designed exclusively for children. They have at least two years of residency training in pediatric surgery in addition to medical school and five years of general surgery training. They are experienced in speaking with children and know how to put them and their parents at ease. They also are certified by the American Board of Surgery in pediatric surgery.

In addition to the surgeons listed here, other pediatric surgeons in specialties such as cardiology, neurosurgery and urology are trained to perform minimally invasive surgery.

Bisgaard has held positions in various areas including ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) nursing and neonatal and pediatric transport, as well as providing neonatal and high-risk pediatric home care. Most recently, she was the discharge coordinator and case manager for the Intensive Care Nursery where she was responsible for discharging infants with complex medical and surgical needs.

Barbara Bratton, pediatric surgery clinical coordinator

Barbara Bratton is the nurse practitioner for pediatric surgery at UCSF Children's Hospital, where she coordinates the care of children with surgical problems. She works with the surgeons and families to provide care to children.

She received her bachelor's degree in nursing at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, Colo., and her master's degree in nursing, with a pediatric nurse practitioner certificate, at the UCSF School of Nursing. She is certified as a pediatric nurse practitioner by the American Nurses Association.

Bratton has held a variety of diverse pediatric nursing positions over the past 20 years including working as a critical care nurse in adult and neonatal intensive care units. She has held several positions including assistant nurse manager, nurse practitioner in the Intensive Care Nursery and the clinical coordinator for the ECMO Program (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation). She has eight years experience as a nurse practitioner in pediatric gastroenterology.

Jody Farrell, Fetal Treatment Center nurse coordinator

Jody Farrell is the nurse coordinator for the Fetal Treatment Center, which receives hundreds of referrals annually. Farrell uses her many years of neonatal experience to provide referring physicians and patients with information on the causes, effects and evaluation of fetuses with birth defects.

In addition, Farrell, a registered nurse at UCSF Medical Center for over 20 years, maintains the database on all patient referrals. Previously, she worked in the Neonatal Intensive Care Nursery, as a staff nurse and as a member of the Neonatal and Pediatric Transport team. From 1991 to 1994, Farrell was the coordinator of the Neonatal/Pediatric ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) Program.

Farrell earned her undergraduate degree and completed requirements for an advanced practice pediatric nurse practitioner master's degree at the UCSF School of Nursing.
