Pediatric Stroke and Cerebrovascular Disease Center
The UCSF Pediatric Stroke and Cerebrovascular Disease Center is the only center in the country offering comprehensive care by the world's leading experts to children with stroke and cerebrovascular disease, including the most challenging and complex conditions. Cerebrovascular disease encompasses a large group of conditions in which the arteries in the brain, or those connected to the brain, are somehow defective. They are rare in children and their management often requires the expertise of multiple specialists, as well as the most advanced diagnostic and treatment approaches.
Team Approach
Ranked the best hospital in the West in neurology and neurosurgery by U.S. News and World Report, we offer a unique team approach by bringing together leading experts in neurology, neurosurgery, hematology and diagnostic and interventional neuroradiology to provide your child with the best possible care. Our team includes a pediatric neurologist who is one of the few experts in the country with special training in childhood stroke and cerebrovascular disease. Complex cases are presented to the pediatric neurovascular team to obtain group recommendations for a patient's treatment plan.
Conditions
We evaluate, diagnose and treat the full range of cerebrovascular diseases, including the most challenging and complex conditions.
Services
Our experts offer comprehensive services to children with cerebrovascular disease, including evaluation, diagnosis, management and treatment.
- Comprehensive Evaluations A pediatric neurologist, one of the few in the country with special training in pediatric cerebrovascular disease and stroke, provides new patients with an initial comprehensive evaluation and coordinates diagnostic work-ups.
Pediatric blood disorder specialists with expertise in thrombosis — the formation of a clot inside a blood vessel, obstructing the flow of blood through the circulatory system — evaluate children suspected of having an increased tendency toward blood clotting.
- Advanced Diagnostic Tests We offer the latest and most advanced tests to help diagnose conditions, including advanced neuro-imagining tests, with particular expertise in pediatric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and angiography in children. Pediatric anesthesiologists perform the sedation needed for pediatric imagining tests, enhancing the safety of the procedure.
- Advanced Treatments Pediatric and vascular neurosurgeons offer state-of-the-art techniques, many of which are not available at other medical centers, for the treatment of cerebrovascular disease, such as microsurgery and Gamma Knife radiosurgery.
UCSF interventional neuroradiology experts pioneered the endovascular treatment of pediatric vascular malformations, such as Vein of Galen malformations. We also offer endovascular treatment for a variety of pediatric cerebrovascular diseases.
Innovation and Research
In addition to caring for patients, our experts are at the forefront of groundbreaking research studying cerebrovascular disease in children, including:
Pioneering epidemiological research on rates and risk factors for childhood stroke, with a goal of developing strategies for stroke prevention in children, performed by the UCSF Stroke Sciences Group.
The biology and natural history of arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), arteriovenous fistulas and aneurysms performed by the UCSF Center for Cerebrovascular Research, one of the country's few dedicated centers for AVM research.
Neonatal stroke, unlocking clues to why ischemia has different effects on children's brains compared to adults' brains, performed by leading researchers in the Neonatal Brain Disorders Laboratory.
UCSF investigators are founding members of the International Pediatric Stroke Study, a worldwide effort to expand knowledge regarding childhood stroke.
