Pediatric Multiple Sclerosis Center

The only one of its kind on the West Coast, the UCSF Regional Pediatric Multiple Sclerosis Center has been designated by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society as a Pediatric Multiple Sclerosis Center of Excellence for comprehensive care of children and adolescents with multiple sclerosis (MS) and related demyelinating diseases, such as acute demyelinating encephalomyelitis (ADEM) and Devic's disease. We are part of the first national network of six centers sponsored by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society to care for pediatric MS and related diseases. As part of this unique network, we have access to the latest information, research and treatments.

What is MS?

MS is a chronic disease that affects the central nervous system, including the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves. About 400,000 Americans live with MS, and an estimated five percent of patients are under 18 years of age. MS is the most common disabling neurological disease affecting young adults.

MS is often misdiagnosed in children and adolescents due to a lack of education and awareness about the disease and its treatments. The origin of the disease and related conditions in younger patients is unknown. Further, it is believed that some cases of MS in adults actually began in childhood and adolescence, although not diagnosed until adulthood. Treatments available for MS in the adult population seem to be well tolerated in the pediatric population, but further studies are necessary.

What Does an MS Center Provide?

To provide our patients with the most comprehensive care possible, we have a multidisciplinary team of experts in MS and related diseases, including adult and pediatric neurologists with expertise in MS, pediatric nurse practitioners, neuropsychologists, social workers, physical therapists and speech therapists. In addition, our team includes scientists and geneticists who are actively researching MS with the goal of better understanding the condition and related diseases and improving treatment.

Our center also collaborates with other institutions to help facilitate evaluation and treatment. Additionally, we have an Adult Multiple Sclerosis Center, which means that our patients benefit from this extensive expertise and knowledge. This also ensures a smooth transfer of care when our young patients reach adulthood.
