The UCSF Interstitial Lung Disease Program is dedicated to improving the lives of patients with interstitial lung disease, or ILD. We do this by focusing on patient care, education and research.
The program specializes in the comprehensive care of people with all types of interstitial lung disease. We provide state-of-the-art diagnosis and treatment recommendations, working as a team to review each case thoroughly and optimize disease and symptom management. We communicate directly with patients and their referring doctors to assure continuity of care and appropriate follow-up.
Our team includes pulmonologists, radiologists, pathologists, nurses and dedicated staff members with expertise in interstitial lung disease. We also work closely with doctors specializing in pulmonary hypertension, rheumatology, gastroenterology, sleep disorders, occupational medicine, laboratory medicine, complementary and integrative medicine, lung transplantation and thoracic surgery. When needed, we call upon colleagues in related fields at UCSF and across the country to help us provide optimal care.
As part of an academic medical center, the UCSF Interstitial Lung Disease Program is also committed to meeting the educational needs of our community in the area of interstitial lung disease. For patients and families, we hold seminars on interstitial lung disease and offer a support group for anyone affected by this condition, called Living Well with ILD. For doctors and other health care providers, we offer continuing medical education sessions on interstitial lung disease as well as a quarterly newsletter.
Our program conducts both laboratory and patient research. We are a member of the National Institute of Health (NIH)-sponsored Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis Clinical Research Network and are involved in most major clinical trials for patients with interstitial lung disease. Our patients have the opportunity to participate in these research trials if they wish.

The UCSF ILD Program is not only a clinic for patient care, but also an active research program. Our research is a collaborative effort among patients, providers and scientists. We carry out several types of interstitial lung disease research:
We are a member of the National Institutes of Health (NIH)-sponsored Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis Clinical Research network, and are involved in most major clinical trials for patients with interstitial lung disease. Funding for our research comes from a variety of public and private sources.
During your visit you may be asked if you are interested in participating in the ILD Database study. It is completely voluntary and the decision whether or not to participate will not impact your care in any way. You will also have the opportunity to learn more about other research studies, including clinical trials.
