One of the first of its kind, the UCSF STAND (Supportive Therapy in Androgen Deprivation) Clinic provides comprehensive care to men with prostate cancer who are receiving androgen deprivation therapy, also known as hormone therapy.
While hormone therapy is an extremely effective cancer treatment, it causes various side effects, including fatigue, hot flashes and sexual changes, such as decreased libido (sex drive) and decreased erectile function. It can also cause weight gain, loss of muscle mass and increased risk of diabetes. These side effects are related to decreased levels of testosterone and can greatly impact a man's quality of life.
The STAND Clinic aims to address the unique needs of men receiving hormone therapy. Renowned experts in prostate cancer, psycho-oncology, symptom management, nutrition, exercise and complementary medicine will meet with you during the same visit, and will provide you with a comprehensive and individualized treatment plan to manage your side effects of hormone therapy. Hormone therapy injections are administered at the clinic during the same visit. Patients also have the opportunity to participate in research studies with the goal of developing new hormone therapies for men with prostate cancer.
