SUMMER 2006
Perspective
Innovation, discovery and access to the latest breakthroughs in medical care have long been hallmarks of the care delivered at UCSF Children's Hospital. In this edition of the News, we highlight programs at UCSF Children's Hospital that harness the power of interdisciplinary research and clinical teams to bring new hope to children and their families throughout Northern California.
Staving Off Type 1 Diabetes with Immune Therapy
Researchers at UCSF are finding success in altering the natural, and previously inexorable, course of type 1 diabetes. Through various drugs, including antibody therapies, the researchers hope to save or preserve the function of insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas.
Multiple Sclerosis in Children Is More Common Than Thought
Multiple sclerosis is increasingly being diagnosed in children and teens. Although physicians have long known that kids can come down with the disease, new technology and emerging awareness of the problem have led them to spot the kind of cases that previously had gone undetected until years later.
UCSF Opens Pediatric MS Center
The UCSF Medical Center has recently opened a Regional Pediatric Multiple Sclerosis Center to address the needs of patients and their families. The pediatric MS center at UCSF is one of only six such clinics in the United States, all of which have opened recently under the sponsorship of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
UCSF Researchers Attack Neuroblastoma
Neuroblastoma is an especially deadly childhood cancer, killing more than half of those afflicted. Under the direction of UCSF pediatric oncologist Kate Matthay, M.D., however, UCSF has become a national leader in treating neuroblastoma and saving kids who might have been lost to the cancer a decade ago.
UCSF Pediatric Anesthesiologists Set the Bar for Care
UCSF pediatric surgical teams have made a commitment to set the standard in Northern California for use of board-certified pediatric anesthesiologists during surgery.
A Place to Prepare for Surgery
Pediatric Prepare is a new program created for children and their families at UCSF Children's Hospital to make the preparation for surgery and anesthesia as painless and anxiety-free as possible. The program has recently inaugurated a dedicated, child-friendly space to make children feel more at ease during one of the most difficult times in their lives.

The new toll-free number (877) UC-CHILD, was created in an effort to make it easier for physicians throughout the region to transport and admit patients to UCSF Children's Hospital.
