SUMMER 2007
Perspective from Children’s Hospital Leaders
The last few months have been an exciting time for us, as we plan for the next century at UCSF Children's Hospital. In addition to recruiting new faculty, we are starting to finalize our plans for a new children's hospital at Mission Bay. After an extremely interesting competition, the San Francisco company Anshen + Allen was named the architectural firm that will build the children's hospital, as well as the new women’s hospital and cancer hospital adjacent to it.
To build this wonderful new hospital, we've initiated a fundraising drive headed by Sterrin Bird, an exceptional organizer whom we stole away from Duke University. Bird will be working closely with Dede Wilsey, whom we have been excited to engage as a campaign chair. Most know Wilsey as the fabulous force behind the fundraising effort for the new de Young Museum.
As a result of the efforts of Bird, Wilsey and so many other incredible people, for the first time ever, there will be a true children's hospital to serve San Francisco and the communities of Northern California.
But we need your input. In order to make this one of the world's exceptional children's hospitals, as we intend it to be, we need to hear the ideas, talents and interests of the pediatricians who will use it. Which means you. At the new hospital, we will be open to community pediatricians, and hope to be a focus for improvements in compassionate, family-centered pediatric care throughout the region. We want you to be involved in the hospital from the very beginning, because although UCSF will be building the children's hospital, in the end it belongs to the physicians and patients who use it.
