FALL 2007
Letter from the Chair
Nancy Ascher, M.D., chair of the Department of Surgery,
discusses three new avenues of research in surgery and their application to important clinical conditions.
Islet Transplant for Chronic Pancreatitis
Building on its expertise in organ transplantation, UCSF is the only medical center west of the Mississippi offering
islet transplantation as an option for managing the diabetes that results from a
treatment of last resort — removal of the diseased pancreas.
New Surgery Program Explores Bioengineering
For the past 20 years, bioengineers and clinicians have been experimenting with the production of surrogate tissues
to replace those that cannot be surgically repaired. UCSF is moving a step closer to realizing that ambition.
Minimally Invasive Esophagectomy
At the newly formed Center for Esophageal Disorders, UCSF is pioneering a minimally invasive approach to the treatment
of esophageal cancer, one
that greatly reduces morbidity while providing a complete excision of the malignancy.
