Letter from the Chair
Nancy Ascher, M.D., chair of the Department of Surgery, discusses advances in surgery at UCSF that provide the most advanced standard of care and superior outcomes for some of the highest-risk patients.
Targeted Treatments for Lung Cancer
Many patients referred to the UCSF Thoracic Oncology Program have been told that their technically challenging tumors cannot be resected. With the surgical skills and expertise of this multidisciplinary team, complete resection that leads to a cure is now possible in patients who otherwise would face recurrent disease and poor outcomes.
Pancreas Center Improving Tumor Survival Rates
Using advances diagnostic techniques, surgeons at the UCSF Pancreas Center are able to find pancreatic tumors at an earlier stage, providing a more accurate prediction of whether a tumor is benign, premalignant or malignant, and whether it can be safely and completely removed. Offering a full range of options, from open procedures to laparoscopic surgery, long-term survival rates following resection of localized pancreatic cancer at UCSF is 41 percent, compared to 20 percent nationally.
Innovations in Living Donor Transplant
UCSF's living donor program, which offers hope to many patients who might die before a kidney or liver becomes available, offers state-of-the-art procedures, expert care for living organ donors and transplant patients. The depth and breadth of the UCSF Transplant Service's experience translate into one-year survival rates that are significantly above the national average.
Kidney Living Donor Transplant — A Case Study
After being diagnosed with polycystic kidney disease at the age of 25, Karen Shatka chose UCSF Medical Center for her transplant surgery. Two years later, Shatka works full time and enjoys biking, walking, aerobics — and is even training for a half marathon.
