John Chung-Kai Chan, M.D.

Gynecologic cancer surgeon

Dr. John K. Chan is director of Gynecologic Oncology and a specialist in the treatment of ovarian and other pelvic cancers at the UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center. As director, Chan oversees the division's activities in patient care, research and education. He also treats patients at UCSF Medical Center at ValleyCare in Pleasanton and Marin General Hospital.

In his research, Chan focuses on new gynecologic cancer treatments including gene therapy, cellular immunotherapy and targeted biologic therapy. These projects have resulted in more than 100 articles and abstracts in journals such as Lancet Oncology, Cancer Research, Journal of Clinical Oncology and multiple book chapters. He is the John A. Kerner Distinguished Professor in Gynecologic Oncology at UCSF and a principal investigator in clinical trials on ovarian cancer. He has received grants from the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation, Gynecologic Cancer Foundation and UCSF Gynecologic Oncology Group. Chan is on the board of directors of the American Cancer Society Northern California Chinese Unit and is fluent in Chinese (Mandarin and Cantonese) and medical Spanish. Prior to joining UCSF, he was a cancer specialist at the Stanford Cancer Center.
