
Acting Chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Theodore Miclau, M.D., looks back on a highly productive year. Clinical, research and educational programs continued to flourish.
UCSF orthopaedic surgeon Richard Coughlin, M.D., spent more than two decades bringing his skills to underserved people around the world. This year, the foot and ankle and trauma specialist at San Francisco General Hospital was recognized for this work by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Coughlin was honored with the 2006 Humanitarian Award.
UCSF orthopaedic surgeon Kevin Bozic, M.D., M.B.A., and his colleagues conducted research on whether the way joint replacements are coded and reimbursed accurately reflects the cost and complexity of the surgeries. Their research won a national award and convinced federal authorities to change the way TJR surgeries are classified.
UCSF is one of the top centers for orthopaedic outcomes studies. UCSF researchers view the assessment of clinical outcomes as essential to improving orthopaedic care.
Orthopaedic surgeon Stephen Pinney, M.D., has taken the lead in building a strong foot and ankle clinic at UCSF and hopes to use the program to advance the state of knowledge in the field.

Tamara N. Alliston, Ph.D., was appointed assistant professor of Orthopaedic Surgery. Her research focuses on the molecular basis of arthritis and the molecular pathways that control the growth and differentiation of skeletal tissues.
