Dr. Pierre Theodore is a surgeon who specializes in the lung, including minimally invasive surgery that shortens hospital stays, reduces pain and allows lung cancer patients to better tolerate chemotherapy, if required. He also is an experienced lung transplant surgeon. In his research, he is investigating lung transplants as treatment for lung cancer in patients with multifocal bronchioloalveolar carcinoma (BAC).
Theodore earned a medical degree at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. He completed a residency in general surgery and a cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at Johns Hopkins Hospital. He also completed fellowships in transplant biology fellowship at Harvard Medical School and in cardiothoracic surgery at La Pitie-Salpetriere Hospital, Paris, France. Theodore joined UCSF Medical Center in 2004 and was named as the first recipient of the Van Auken Endowed Chair in Thoracic Oncology in 2007. He is a member of the Stanley J. Sarnoff Endowment, American Association for the Advancement of Science, International Society for Heart Lung Transplant, Transplantation Society and Society of Thoracic Surgeons. Theodore, who served as a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Naval Reserve Medical Corps, is an assistant professor of surgery at UCSF.
