The Health Program for Performing Artists is one of the first programs dedicated to the study, diagnosis and treatment of ailments commonly encountered by performing artists of all ages. We offer rehabilitation consultation, physical therapy services, and referrals to specialists in orthopedics, neurology, psychology and movement therapy who are sensitive to the special needs of musicians.
The program was founded in 1985 by the late Dr. Peter Oswald, a prominent member of the UCSF department of psychiatry for 40 years. Oswald, who died in 1996, was a gifted violinist and writer. The program is now directed by physical therapist Nancy Byl.
Dancers are treated at the Dance Medicine Center.
