Steven R. Hays, M.D.

Pulmonologist

Dr. Steven Hays is a pulmonologist and medical director of the Lung Transplant Program, known for accepting patients with complex conditions and maintaining survival rates consistently higher than the national average. His expertise is in the treatment of patients with end-stage lung disease who go on to get lung transplants. Conditions treated include cystic fibrosis, emphysema associated with alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, and interstitial lung disease. His key area of research is studying the mechanisms of airway remodeling in the transplanted lung.

Hays earned a medical degree at the University of Kansas in 1995. He completed a residency in internal medicine at the University of Kansas Medical Center, where he served as chief resident, and a fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine at UCSF. He also completed a lung transplant fellowship at Stanford University Hospital.
