This issue of Inside Surgery highlights the UCSF Lung Transplant Program and the new technology called ex vivo lung perfusion that will help to increase the availability of donor lungs. Lung Transplant Program

UCSF Medical Center is at the forefront of successfully treating patients with end-stage lung disease who have exhausted traditional medical therapies. The UCSF Lung Transplant Program is one of three in the nation with higher-than-expected one-year patient survival rates, even though UCSF transplants some of the most complex patients.

Pediatric Heart Failure and Pediatric Heart and Lung Transplant Program

UCSF Medical Center is establishing a new UCSF Pediatric Heart and Pediatric Heart and Lung Transplant Program that will treat the full range of conditions related to pediatric heart and lung failure. It will also serve as a resource model of excellence both nationally and internationally.

Cardiac Transplantation and Mechanical Circulatory Support

UCSF Medical Center is entering a new era of treatment for patients with advanced heart failure. In late 2011, Georg Wieselthaler, M.D., a leading heart transplant surgeon and an expert in ventricular assist devices, was appointed as the director and surgical chief of Cardiac Transplantation and Mechanical Circulatory Support.
