Easing Referrals for Complex Trauma Patients

"Complex trauma patients need access to expert care as quickly as possible," says UCSF trauma surgeon Saam Morshed, M.D., Ph.D., M.P.H.

The Orthopaedic Trauma Service at UCSF Medical Center has been built precisely for the type of acute-to-acute transfers that facilitate this much-needed access. There, a multidisciplinary team includes orthopaedic, general, neuro and plastic surgeons, along with physician assistants and nurse practitioners specially trained in trauma care.

To ease the process, referring physicians can use the standard referral number for the Transfer Center, which is (415) 353-9166, or they can contact the Orthopaedic Institute at (415) 353-2808, where phone operators have been trained to triage procedures.

"We do everything in our power to take the burden off referring physicians," says Morshed.

Dr. Saam Morshed can be contacted at (415) 353-2808.
