MRI May Be Key in Assessing Knee Injuries

MRI may become an important tool for diagnosing knee injuries and monitoring recovery after surgery, according to orthopaedic surgeon Benjamin Ma, M.D., who is using standard MRI and MRI spectroscopy to measure knee kinematics and tissue injury. He also uses MRI to look at the progress of ACL repairs and bone bruises, with the hope that use of the imaging system will lead to better surgical technique and tissue repair in the future.

Myoelectric Prostheses Offer Advantages

Although myoelectric prostheses are much more expensive than conventional prostheses, they afford the patient major benefits that make it hard to justify using conventional prostheses for the upper body.

ABC Fellowship Forms International Links

UCSF orthopaedic surgeon Sigurd Berven, M.D., was one of seven American and Canadian surgeons to take part in the prestigious 2005 ABC Exchange Traveling Fellowship. The group visited orthopaedic centers in Britain and South Africa and shared with their hosts their interests in orthopaedic clinical care and basic science, along with "good food, good drink and good fun," Berven says.
