Carol Zlatunich is a senior dietitian who specializes in caring for patients with inherited metabolic disorders. Her expertise includes treating phenylketonuria (PKU) and other protein metabolism disorders, fatty acid oxidation disorders and carbohydrate metabolism disorders. She cares for patients of all ages, from newborn through adulthood. She is passionate about working with families as part of successfully managing both individual and family treatment plans.

Zlatunich earned her bachelor's degree in nutrition and dietetics at Montana State University and completed her training with an internship in dietetics at UCSF. She is a specialist in pediatric nutrition. She joined UCSF in 1990.

Zlatunich has participated in studies involving patients with metabolic disorders and has served on metabolic disorder advisory boards. A member of Genetic Metabolic Dietitians International, she has served on committees for the organization and written for its newsletter. She teaches classes to dietetic interns and other health care professionals at UCSF and to people in the community. She created a poster on the nutritional management of glycogen storage disease type IX as well as a web interview for the website of Horizon Therapeutics on low-protein diets in urea cycle disorders, and she has authored numerous patient education handouts.

An outdoor enthusiast, Zlatunich is passionate about travel and wildlife conservation.
