Dr. Ninad Sham Karandikar is a physical medicine and rehabilitation specialist who focuses on providing nonsurgical care for patients with new or chronic spine pain and those with musculoskeletal disorders. He specializes in diagnosing and treating spine pain, including with nerve conduction studies (which test how quickly electric impulses move through nerves) and spinal injections for pain relief.
In research, Karandikar has published papers on prosthetics, gait analysis and regenerative medicine (a field actively seeking methods of restoring damaged or diseased tissues and organs). His research interests also include applying digital health and artificial intelligence to the improvement of patient outcomes and health equity.
Karandikar earned his medical degree from Seth Gordhandas Sunderdas Medical College in India. He completed a residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at the University of Kentucky, followed by Stanford University's physical medicine and rehabilitation interventional spine fellowship.
Prior to joining UCSF, Karandikar served as clinical associate professor of orthopedic surgery at Stanford University School of Medicine, as well as assistant chief of physical medicine and rehabilitation and medical director at the Palo Alto Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
A dedicated educator, Karandikar has extensive experience teaching and mentoring medical students, residents, fellows and other health care professionals. He has received numerous regional and national teaching awards.
Outside of his practice, Karandikar enjoys spending time with family, traveling, and exploring diverse cuisines.
