Urologic cancer surgeon

Dr. Peter Carroll is a surgeon specializing in urological oncology. He is internationally known for his expertise in managing patients with cancers of the urinary system.

In research, Carroll's areas of interest include early detection and patient-centered management of urological cancers, most notably prostate cancer. He is principal investigator or co-investigator of many studies that received peer-reviewed research grants as well as author or co-author of more than 700 publications.

Carroll earned his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine, graduating with honors. He completed training in general surgery and a residency in urology at UCSF. He completed a fellowship in urologic oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center before returning to UCSF. He also has a master of public health degree from the University of California, Berkeley.

At UCSF, he holds both the Ken and Donna Derr-Chevron and Taube Family distinguished professorships.

    Plain English. No jargon. Paused to listen to questions and provided rational and alternatives for his recommendations. All done in about 15 minutes. And a friendly guy to boot.

    This long distance visit would have been more productive if the doctor had seen from my records before I traveled 1000 miles round trip that I had not had a biopsy needed prior to deciding on a course of treatment if any. Communicating that to my referring urologist BEFORE making this appointment would have been a good idea. Having to either stay longer in San Francisco to have this done there or returning again to have it done later seems not well thought out.

    This was a referral from the San Francisco Firefighters Cancer Prevention Foundation. Dr. Carroll was amazing in his communication. It is clear to see why he is held in such high esteem.

    The only glitch was that I asked Peter if he could give me permission to record. He apparently did not know how to allow me to record and ended up recording the session on his end. His staff are going to try to find and email me the recording. Keeping my fingers crossed!

    Dr. Carroll referred a couple of times to MRI images of my prostate that needed to be "overread". I did not understand this and I probably should have asked. But I know that he has an enormous caseload so I am not want to hold him up. I later clarified this issue with his staff.

    Dr. Carroll is an expert in this field and his advice is always top notch. Dr. Carroll gave us a feeling of being rushed and wanting to finish the conversation as quickly as possible. In previous conversations there have been times where he has been more friendly and giving of his time and others where he has been relatively short and quick with me. That behavior was not too distracting from the goals of the visit which were achieved.

    No follow up appointment given. No instruction on getting a biopsy done but rather someone (who is someone??) will contact me (when??). The UCSF system is remote uncaring and unfriendly admittedly based on my experience with urologic oncology.
