Tina Bhutani

MD MAS

Co-director, Dermatology Clinical Research Unit
Co-director, Psoriasis and Skin Treatment Center
Dermatologist
Mom, wife, doctor and clinical researcher

Dr. Tina Bhutani is a dermatologist who focuses on treating chronic inflammatory skin diseases, especially psoriasis and eczema. She co-directs the UCSF Psoriasis and Skin Treatment Center, where she specializes in caring for patients with complex cases requiring treatment with multiple modalities, including topical medications, phototherapy (light therapy), systemic agents (medications that work throughout the body) and biologics (medications made with components of living organisms).

Bhutani believes in a well-rounded approach to care that includes considering each patient's overall wellness and mental health in addition to treating the particular skin disease. She believes that treating mind, body and skin increases the probability of a successful outcome and helps patients with chronic conditions cope.

Bhutani's research focuses on improving quality of life for patients with chronic inflammatory skin diseases. She seeks to further describe the mind-skin connection in order to learn how to disrupt the cycle of disease flare-up, mental stress and worsening disease, often fueled by social stigma, stress, social isolation and depression. She co-directs the UCSF Dermatology Clinical Research Unit.

After earning her bachelor's degree in animal physiology and neuroscience at the University of California, San Diego, Bhutani completed her medical degree at the University of Southern California's Keck School of Medicine. She completed a residency in dermatology at UCSF, where she later completed a master of advanced study degree in clinical research.

Bhutani belongs to the American Academy of Dermatology, National Psoriasis Foundation, National Eczema Association, Women's Dermatologic Society and San Francisco Dermatological Society.

The doctor was great. I saw her for 20 minutes and it cost me . I have Kaiser so this visit was out of pocket. I was truly shocked and distraught over this bill. I will never go to a UCSF doc again.

My only issue is is she gave me a shot-in-the-dark treatment to try with no back up options for relief if that didn't work.

I was asked to try a new topical ointment. But I later found out it costs for a 60 day supply. There should have been some discussion of the cost versus benefit of trying this new drug.

Absolutely love Dr. Bhutani. She took over my case for Dr. Koo and I've been very pleased with our relationship and her help guidance and flexibility in giving me telehealth appointments now that I have a baby.

I wish there were options to her recommendations. It felt very quick and short and as someone who has less knowledge about skincare I wish there was more options for my skincare
