Dr. Adib A. Abla is a vascular and endovascular neurosurgeon who specializes in treating conditions involving blood vessels in the brain. These include brain aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, cavernous malformations, arteriovenous fistulas, stroke and carotid artery disease. He performs both traditional open surgery and minimally invasive endovascular procedures, offering patients a comprehensive set of treatment options. He cares for both adult and pediatric patients.
Abla is chief of vascular neurosurgery and director of UCSF's surgical program for cerebrovascular disorders.
Abla's research interests include computer modeling of brain aneurysms and their treatments, as well as laboratory testing of specific approaches and new techniques to improve outcomes for cerebrovascular surgery patients. He is particularly involved in research addressing fusiform aneurysms of the basilar artery (a condition involving an abnormal bulge in a blood vessel that supplies oxygen to the brain). He also studies minimally invasive treatments for hypertensive hemorrhage (when high blood pressure results in bleeding into the brain).
Abla earned his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He then completed a neurosurgery residency as well as a cerebrovascular and skull base fellowship at the Barrow Neurological Institute. He also completed a vascular neurosurgery fellowship at UCSF.
Before joining UCSF, Abla was director of cerebrovascular surgery at the University of Arkansas, where he practiced vascular and endovascular neurosurgery for three years. He has authored or co-authored more than 100 articles in peer-reviewed medical journals and has delivered more than 50 presentations to audiences all over the world.
Abla is a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and Congress of Neurological Surgeons.
