Endocrine surgeon

Dr. Quan-Yang Duh is UCSF's chief of endocrine surgery. He cares for patients with hormone gland tumors, including those of the thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal glands, as well as for patients with gastrointestinal cancers. He has a special interest in treating these disorders with laparoscopic and other minimally invasive procedures. He also supervises medical students, residents and fellows training at the San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Duh has published more than 400 papers and co-edited three textbooks. He serves on the editorial boards of numerous medical journals, including Thyroid, British Journal of Surgery, JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association) Surgery, Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, Journal of the Endocrine Society and Asian Journal of Surgery. He has served as president of the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons and Pacific Coast Surgical Association, and he was the first vice president of the American College of Surgeons.

Duh earned his bachelor's degree in molecular biophysics and biochemistry at Yale University. He earned his medical degree at UCSF, where he also completed a residency in surgery and a fellowship in endocrine surgery.

    He didn't hear me as I expressed concern about surgery because of another condition CRPS I have that could easily spread because of surgery. He also had never heard of it which concerned me.

    I often find doctors to be dismissive and impersonal and I often feel rushed and intimidated. Dr. Duh was wonderful. He has explains things in a very understandable way. He is warm and patient and has a sense of humor. It was clear his staff and residents/interns enjoy working with him. One of the best experiences with a doctor that I have ever had.

    Very clear explaining issues gave description from beginning to end in1st 2nd & 3rd analogy including risk factors for every aspect of proceedure(s). Explained knowledge of degree vs Diagnosis of 1% individual rarity of the condition.

    Dr. Duh made it clear to me that he didn't have enough time to answer my questions. He said he had many other patients to see that day and that he was already going to run behind (even though I was the first patient of the day.) I am dealing with hyperparathyroidism which involves surgery to the throat. Surgeons who perform this operation do not all agree with the approach that should be used. It was very important to me to have confidence in my surgeon and his approach. Because Dr. Duh was rushed I was unable to gain confidence in him. I was disappointed.

    If there were an Excellent or Outstanding rating I would have given that. Dr. Duh was amazing. My husband joined me on the call and we both agreed that he was incredibly knowledgeable and extremely articulate. He had studied my records and was very familiar with the issues so that we could have an in-depth discussion including alternatives. At the end of our visit we felt very comfortable that we had been provided the best advice and care. We feel we can rely upon Dr. Duh's medical opinion and trust in his judgment as well as his surgical skill.
